African Diaspora Dance and Music


AkomaAsa Arts African Diaspora Dance and Music (ADDM) is an integrated specialist training and cultural education programme that nurtures young people to be multifaceted artists. 

  • This programme is designed for young people between the age of 10-18 and it is delivered by leading professionals working in the dance and music industry. The African Diaspora Dance & Music curriculum at AkomaAsa Arts is structured to provide students with a foundation in Western and African dance forms including Hip Hop, Jazz Theatre and choreography.  All these associated techniques are underpinned by contextual studies. We also offer Southern and Western African drumming and percussion techniques, specialising in Djembe, Dundun & various drums, and percussion instruments. Young people will be taught hand & stick drumming techniques. 

  • Dance - A range of Western and African dance forms.

    Music - Drumming -hand and stick techniques and percussion.

    Vocals - Singing within the context of dance and creative works.

    Performance Skills - Performance experience, rehearsal and audition techniques

    Learning about Dance -- Social Cultural Historical research

  • Students will be required to attend up to 12.5 hours per week outside of school hours. Weekly classes will take place on Saturdays - 10:00am - 5:30pm.

  • Week-day classes: when offered will run on Monday and Thursday evenings 5:00pm -7:30pm.

  • Our technique classes are designed to help the young people to develop skills that will enable them to gain an understanding of the human body within the context of movement, dance, and somatic practices.
